Spanish for Expats and Travelers Program

7 Hours to Master the Basics 7 Days to Speaking With Confidence 7 Weeks to Functionality...

GUARANTEED TO WORK

More Than Just a Language Course, Our Online Spanish for Expats and Travelers (SET) Program Gives You the Conversational and Cultural Know-How to Successfully Navigate the Spanish-Speaking World.

Dear Reader,

Life’s richest experiences come from meaningful connections...

So it just makes sense that if you plan to spend time—maybe even move to—a Spanish-speaking country...you’ll want to speak at least a bit of the language.

It’s the best way to really understand the culture and be more comfortable and confident, too.

I’m David Gold. I’m the founder of Casco Antiguo Spanish School in Panama City’s Old Town, Casco Viejo.

I am not a native Spanish speaker. And I’ll admit that it took me a while to get to where I am today...to have meaningful conversations with people I meet...get my business done with confidence...and enjoy the “viva la vida” culture that I love.

And that’s what I want for you—especially if you plan to spend an extended amount of time in Latin America or Spain...or anywhere Spanish is spoken.

It’s the second-most spoken language in the US today, by the way. You likely hear it all the time.

The thing is, though, it doesn’t have to take you as long as it took me to quickly get up to speed speaking Spanish.

Once you grasp the basics...and importantly, once you understand some of the cultural backbeat... you can instantly start putting together sentences that make sense and help you make those all-important connections.

You Likely Already Know More Spanish Than You Think.

You Just Need to Put it Together

You probably even speak it a bit. You know how to say por favor and gracias, for example... please and thank you...And cerveza and baño...beer and bathroom...amigo...friend.

Many of the words you use every day come from Spanish: patio, plaza, cafeteria. Even city and state names...El Paso, Los Angeles, Montana...

After years of “adulting,” you have lots of words like this in your huge vocabulary...easy connections, and a helpful tool when learning another language.

My point is: You already know more Spanish than you think you do.

We’ll take a little quiz in a minute to test that. The 7-7-7 Spanish Challenge.

And then I’ll show you how, with a few simple exercises—and a foundation of vocabulary you already know—you can start making those connections.

7 Hours to Master the Basics After the first a couple of sessions, you’ll master the Spanish phrases you need to introduce yourself, make friends, and ask and answer basic questions...

You can do this all online...From the comfort of your home...on your own time.

7 Days to Speaking With Confidence Keep at it and you’ll soon have the confidence to express your essential wants and needs: I want to buy... I need help with... and so on...

7 Weeks to Functionality After a few weeks, you’ll have the skills to function in Spanish in just about any situation: Making small talk with people you meet...giving directions to your taxi or Uber driver... Going to the doctor or dentist...the market or hardware store, the bank, finding a rental...

This isn’t like most language programs—certainly not like the robotic AI-generated apps you might be used to.

Most of them focus hard on conjugations...and memorizing phrases you’ll never use: Maria runs up the hill. Maria ran up the hill. Maria will run up the hill. Maria would have run up the hill.

You get the idea. That’s a time-consuming, old-school technique that just isn’t practical in today’s world, where—in a matter of hours—you can travel from the English-speaking world to a Spanish-speaking one.

You need to be able to function from the minute you get off the plane.

My team and I—real humans—can show you a quick and easy way to do that.

And that’s to start with the basic real-world phrases you need as a traveler or expat.

You want to be able to introduce yourself to a new friend. Give directions to a driver. Order a meal in a restaurant. Real-world activities.

And I get it...you may have been discouraged in the past. Maybe you think it’s just too difficult to really get up-to-speed at this point in your life.

But I promise you: It can be easier than you think.

This Worked for Me. And I Promise It Will Work for You

I know, because it worked for me.

Like you maybe, I studied Spanish in high school and college. I joined the Peace Corps in 2006 and went to Bolivia where I discovered that those traditional Spanish-class book lessons hadn’t worked for me. Not a bit

I was like a fish out of water. I didn’t speak the language, I didn’t understand the culture, I was lost...uncomfortable.

Until, that is, something clicked for me. I changed my mindset, to be honest...

I realized I didn’t need to be perfect or fluent. I just needed to function...and there was far more to that than memorizing verb tenses, which is hard....and the reason many of us give  up.

Instead, I focused on mastering the real-world phrases I needed most...like asking someone’s name or explaining, in the market, how many bananas I want and asking how much they cost...

I discovered “why” Spanish speakers sometimes do and say things differently than we English speakers do. That was a cultural breakthrough.

And that’s when speaking Spanish became fun...and so much easier.

Let me tell you a quick story. Several years ago, I went to Cabo San Lucas on a family trip with my cousins. We were looking for a club to go out dancing. In Bolivia, the word my Argentine roommates used for a nightclub was "boliche," so I asked the hotel for best boliche...

When my cousins and I took a taxi there, though, we found a closed bowling alley. That’s what "boliche" means in Mexico and some other places...a bowling alley.

A word you might better recognize is “caliente.” Hot. Tell someone you’re caliente, though, and it means you’re “hot” as in horny...likely not what you want to say...

Along with speaking the language correctly, these little cultural differences are important to understand.

Anyhow... Fast forward... With the personal techniques I’d used in the Peace Corps, I founded Casco Antiguo Spanish school in 2010.

Maybe you’ve heard of us?

Our school’s been featured in publications like National Geographic, the New York Post, and more. We’re top-rated on TripAdvisor and Google.

I hope it doesn’t sound like bragging when I say we’re recommended by many embassies and multi-national corporations who send employees to us. They want...and need to...hit the ground running.

Over the years, thousands of students have passed through our doors—college students, young and middle-aged businesspeople who’ve come to Latin America to work...

And more and more older people...retirees, would-be expats and those that already live here...

They’re looking to build their confidence and amp up their enjoyment of daily activities...like chatting to someone at their hotel or apartment, going to restaurants, going shopping, taking Ubers and taxis, seeing a doctor or dentist, and so on...

For many years now, we’ve shared our story at International Living conferences in Panama and had IL readers at our school. And we’d love to have you as one of them.

But before you commit to the time and expense of travel, I have a proposition for you...

Give my online program a try...

Take My 7-7-7 Spanish Challenge.

My promise is this: With my team’s help, in just 7 hours you’ll master the basics...in 7 days you’ll be speaking with confidence...and after you’ve gone through the full program...in about 7 weeks—you’ll be speaking solidly functional Spanish...

You’ll have the confidence to order at a restaurant, ask questions in stores and markets, communicate your needs to real estate and rental agents, go to the bank, the electric company, and more...

Before I explain how this works, let’s get to those quizzes I mentioned...I have two for you: a quick language-knowledge exercise and a short self-assessment quiz.

Grab your pencil and paper. Here’s what we’ll do...

Let’s Start With a Quiz to Test Your Knowledge

Grab a pencil and paper.

I’m going to give you a word in Spanish and you write down the English translation.

I’ll bet you know most of these...If you don’t, though, that’s okay. I’ll give you another chance.

Here we go...

The first word is casa. Write down what that means.

Word #2 is mesa. Write down what that means in English.

Word #3 is playa. What does that mean? Write it down.

Moving on... Word #4 is siesta. Write down what that means.

Let’s do three more. I have a feeling this is easy for you.

Word #5 is cinco.

Word #6 is mucho.

Let’s make the last word a little harder and see how you do...

The last word is necesito. Write down what you think that means, the way it’s spelled should give you a good clue

Okay, let’s see how many you got right. If you missed any, don’t worry. I’m going to add a helpful graphic.

#1 – casa. That means house. I’ll bet you knew that.

#2 – mesa is a table. Like we learned in grade school, it’s also a flat-top hill or mountain...which comes from Spanish for table.

#3 playa—means beach. Maybe you’ve been to Playa del Rey—King’s beach—in Los Angeles or Playa del Carmen, Mexico...

#4 siesta means nap. I’ll bet you know that one...

#5 cinco means five...you’ve probably heard of cinco de Mayo, right, a Mexican holiday celebrated more in the US than it is in Mexico...

#6 mucho translates to “a lot”...or even much or many...

Now, the last word. Did you get that one? Necesito means “I need.” You can see the word necessary right there... This is a word you’ll use often....

Necesito una siesta. I need a nap.

Necesito una mesa you might say in a restaurant. I need a table.

Necesito cinco cervezas...I need five beers. (ha! I am kinda thirsty here..)

How’d you do with the quiz?

I’ll bet you did well, but if you didn’t know the words from just hearing then, did seeing them spelled out help? I’d guess the graphics helped, too.

That’s how we learn... We hear the word, we see what it means, we see it in writing.

I’m going to come back to this idea in a minute—hear it, see it, see how it’s written...because it’s a crucial part of learning a language.

But first, let me take this point a bit further... let me show you some more Spanish words...

Vamos
Pronto
Diablo
Hombre
Mañana
Casita
Bodega
Madre
Padre
Loco
Chica
Muchacho
Macho
Bravo
Siesta
Fiesta
Vista
Agua

I’ll bet you know what these words mean, right? I could go on and on with more words like this...

These aren’t even the easy ones, like food words—taco, burrito, cilantro, vanilla, daiquiri, cerveza, habanero...

And there are words that originated in Spanish...burro, bonanza, lasso, mosquito, armada, sierra...

Now take a look at these:

Federal
Horrible
Social
Actor
Adorable
Hospital
Internet
Flexible

These words are spelled exactly the same in both English and Spanish, they’re just pronounced a bit differently. We’ll talk more about pronunciation in a minute...and the best way to master that...

There are even a few phrases I’m sure you know, like: hasta la vista, que paso, muy bueno, que sera sera, vaya con dios, Feliz Navidad, cinco de mayo...

Again, my point is: You already know a lot of Spanish....a good foundation to build on.

We’ll come back to that. But first,  let’s take a short self-assessment exercise.

Quick Self-Assessment Q&A

I have just cinco little questions for you–grab your paper and pencil again.

For each of these questions, answer “si” or “yes” or “no.” The word no is exactly the same in both English and Spanish. Lots of words are just the same or very similar...

Ok, let’s get started...

Question #1—uno: Do you have plans to spend time in...visit or possibly even relocate to...a Spanish-speaking country?

Si or no?

If your answer is “si” (YES), then give yourself 1 point.

Question #2—dos: Do you want to speak Spanish but you’re not crazy about memorizing verb conjugations?

While it’s true that verb conjugations are a necessary evil, memorizing them for thousands of verbs isn’t productive...not when you want to be as functional as possible as quickly as possible.

And not when there’s an easier way.

Again, if your answer is “si,”—you want to make this as easy as possible—give yourself 1 point.

Question #3—tres: Do you dislike spending hours each day in a classroom?

First let me say that at our school in Panama City, we have a lot of fun.

Casco Viejo is a gorgeous, exciting place. I’d invite you to join us there if your schedule permits. You won’t regret it.

But... if you don’t have the time or inclination... or don’t want the expense of travel, I get it.

And I have the perfect option for you I’ll explain in a minute.

But back to the quiz...if you’d prefer to work on your Spanish one-on-one... not in a room full of others who might hold you back... but at your own pace and on your own time....

A yes or “si” answer to this question earns you another point.

Question #4—cuatro: Do you have a computer, phone, or tablet device you can access?

Give yourself another point if your answer is si.

Question #5—cinco: Can you find 5 or 10-minute chunks of time now and then to devote to learning Spanish?

Maybe when you’re drinking your morning coffee or having your lunch?

Time is precious, I get it. But you don’t need to give up much of it.

In just a couple of minutes, you really can start speaking Spanish—practical phrases you’ll use in the real world, as I showed you in the quiz we just took.

Necesito una mesa—I need a table, when you walk into a restaurant.

Necesito un taxi you can tell the guy at your hotel. The word taxi is another word that’s the same in both English and Spanish.

If you can commit to 10 minutes here and there on some easy Spanish phrases like this, answer “si” and give yourself another point.

Tally your score. Here’s how to judge your results...

There are cinco points here on la mesa—the table. Add them up

If you have just 1-2 points, don’t be discouraged. As long as you have the desire, we can help you get to the next level.

If you have 3-4 points, our new Spanish-learning system is for you.

If you have 5 points, you’re golden. You have the desire, the motivation, you’re the perfect candidate to succeed at this, and you absolutely should pursue this opportunity.

As you may have guessed by now, my team and I have created an online Spanish program that we deliver in manageable five to 15-minute segments.

You don’t have to commit to doing it every day, but whenever you want...once a day, every other day, binge on a few, take a break...

But you do have to set aside about 10 minutes whenever you can. Do that and you’ll soon be speaking and understanding conversational Spanish.

That last part...developing your ear and understanding what’s said to you is critical. I’ll show you how we’ll help you do that.

First...please don’t think you’re too old for this. Our program is designed for adults of all ages...

...but especially if you want to get up to speed fast and don’t have a lot of time to spend in a classroom.

Anyone can learn to speak Spanish, and this program will work for you, no matter your age. I guarantee that.

Let me show you how our system works and why I’m so sure it will work for you.

Here’s How You Can Start Speaking Spanish Today… Without Getting on a Plane or Spending Thousands of Dollars.

As I said, thousands of students have mastered Spanish at our school in Panama, including many from International Living.

And now...from your home or wherever you may be—you can do the same…without any travel. You can get started on an easy path to really being able to communicate in Spanish without setting foot in any classroom…

With encouragement from my friends at International Living, my team and I have developed the ultimate Spanish language experience.

It’s our Spanish for Expats and Travelers (SET) Program.

More than a classroom or typical learning situation, it’s—as I’ve said—an easy self-directed program of real-world experiences that will have you speaking Spanish after your very first short session. Guaranteed.

You work at your own pace and from your own location...anytime, anywhere.

Best of all, you get ongoing support from my team and me.

Together, our team of professionals spent months brainstorming and strategizing the best ways to give you the building blocks you need to craft sentences and make conversation...starting with the fundamental real-world phrases you need to know...

Once we’d developed these real-life scenarios, we spent months in the studio, creating more than 50 top-quality videos—all in concise manageable segments.

Again, this isn’t computer-generated stuff created by some non-emotional algorithm.

Every scenario is created by us...real humans...based on the kinds of real-life encounters you experience every day.

You won’t be over-stressed or bored, I promise.

Just hit “play” and together, we’ll focus on getting you from where you are to where you want to be.

In just 10-minute manageable and relevant increments, you’ll learn Spanish, almost without realizing it’s happening.

Those old-school “academic” lessons that didn’t work for lots of people (maybe you?)—that’s a thing of the past.

Here’s How it Works...

In my Spanish for Expats and Travelers Program, I personally introduce each session with an introductory video shot at a real-life location that matches the theme of each lesson...

...a restaurant or café...the market, bank, medical clinic...and so on. We’ll take you up close to the places and experiences your lesson focuses on.

Via video, you’ll get real-life insight into the kinds of cultural immersion you’ll have in the Spanish-speaking world.

The lessons themselves are short enough that you’ll never be overwhelmed. They are, though, practical and to-the-point with words and phrases that are easy to follow and remember.

Each session is short and manageable... relevant and memorable.
  • Seven modules follow the path most of you will take when you arrive in a Spanish-speaking country...

...from introducing yourself and making friends to describing things around you...shopping in markets, dining out, traveling, visiting a medical clinic...

...to the nuts-and-bolts experiences of finding a place to live, setting up utilities and internet, your banking needs, and building strong relationships with neighbors and everyone you meet.

  • Each module has an average 6 to 10 videos—most of which are each about 10 minutes long.

Just long enough for you to really grasp and retain the information, but not so long that it hurts your brain or eats into your day.

No Fear Zone—no classroom performance required.

That’s the biggest complaint from students in a typical classroom setting...it’s too long, too intense, too structured.

  • Plus, with this self-paced at-home program, you don’t have to “perform” in front of anyone.

In a classroom, this can be intimidating. No one wants to look or sound foolish. But in this case, it’s just you responding to your instructor.

Work at Your Own Pace, On Your Own Timeline

With our SET program, you can interact with these short videos any time...while dinner’s in the oven, during lunch...and you can go back and review them any time as often as you need.

Remember, too, we’re not just giving you language examples, we’re explaining why words and phrases are used as they are...these cultural nuances help things click, believe me.

For instance...in Spanish, adjectives generally come after the noun they describe. Una casa grande...the literal English translation is “a house big.”

But in Spanish, the approach is first the noun and then the descriptor.

Native speakers help you master pronunciation
  • In our program, you’ll be guided by native Spanish speakers... the top instructors at our school who speak very clearly and have university teaching degrees and years of experience...

You see—and hear—the actual tones, accents and inflections you’ll hear when you’re in the country yourself.

I could host these videos myself—but even after 20 years in Latin America, I don’t have a native accent. And that’s okay.

But I want you to hear from someone who does.

That’s what this SET program is all about, after all: replicating the real-world experience you’ll have in a Spanish-speaking country.

To be clear, though, your guides will work with you on your pronunciation...that’s critical. And you’ll be prompted to repeat phrases often.

Replication makes perfect.

We’ll give you lots of helpful tips and “repeat after me” exercises to make sure you’re comfortable...

As anyone who’s taken the first steps to a new language will tell you, when you make even just a bit of effort to speak it, you’ll be rewarded with smiles and goodwill...

Just say the words and don’t worry about your accent. That will come in time.

Remember, you can go back and review any video at any time to ensure that you don’t forget a thing…

It really is the next best thing to being in a total immersion situation. Your video leader speaks slowly and reinforces every word, every phrase, every nuance…

Visuals that reinforce it all

Plus, we employ short easy-to-read graphics to help you visualize exactly what’s being said.

That’s the way we were taught to speak and read by our parents.

They didn’t show us flash cards or make us memorize verb tenses. They just talked to us and repeated words... a ball, for example, repeating that word or a phrase: Catch the ball.

And that’s what we do via video...talk to you in short, relatable sentences about things you see and do every day.

Review anytime, to make sure you really get it

You never have to worry about falling behind, as you might in a real classroom setting. If you want to review any segment, you can—just hit rewind and start again.

Most importantly, we want you to have fun. Work at your own pace, no pressure, no intimidation.

Start and stop, take a break, play and repeat at your leisure ... any time and any place you want... until you get it.

Not just videos, there’s loads of practical practicum packed into our Spanish for Expats and Travelers Program.

53 videos in all, each with an additional video introduction from me

As mentioned, there are 7 themed modules, each with related videos—53 in all—and each introduced by me.

Each one empowers you with handy and easy real-world phrases—reinforced by visuals—you’ll use again and again.

60 fun games to play

To help you lock into those phrases, each video and module comes with a fun game—60 of them you can play at your leisure—a great way to learn...

Short fun quizzes to reinforce it all

Every video also comes with a short quiz so you can test and reinforce your retention...and measure your progress. If it’s not where you want it to be, watch the video again...

Comprehensive PDF dictionaries of words and translations

You’ll get a comprehensive PDF of all the Spanish verbs we talk about and a complete Spanish-to-English PDF translation for each module that revisits every phrase.

We want to make sure you really get this...

And you will get it, I promise.

All you need to do now is raise your hand and let me know you’re ready to get started...

We’ll make this as interactive as possible. You’ll have my email address, so send me your questions and comments and each week, I’ll address as many as possible in my weekly videos.

For instance, are you curious about why a particular word...like carro...car...or auto...auto...is preferred in Latin American Spanish over the word coche...coach, which is more often used in Spain?

Maybe you want an easy way to remember when to use feminine or masculine pronouns?

Or you have a cultural question, maybe about the “mañana” custom you may have heard about...or even the tipping protocol here in Panama or Costa Rica, Mexico...

No question is off the table.

These video discussions will be informal and to-the-point...I think they’ll be entertaining, too—designed to help you better understand the culture and language in a fun way...

FREE Bonus #2 Special Report: 50 Ways to Faster Fluency: Fun, Simple Things You Can Do to Quickly Step Up Your Spanish Skills

I’m really excited about this special report I created with the editors at International Living. We all shared the little things we’ve done to quickly ratchet up our Spanish speaking and comprehension skills...

From free online apps (only the good ones) to our favorite Spanish-language books, music, podcasts, and movies (with English subtitles) that helped us and will help you, too. To be clear, we receive no financial compensation for mentioning these, they are just the ones our team believe to be the best.

IL editor Dan Prescher is a musician—he has a couple of Los Lobos and Linda Rondstadt tunes in his repertoire, which he learned from some of the Spanish albums those artists recorded.

Another editor shares her favorite Spanish tongue twisters that helped her perfect her accent.

We point you to our favorite local websites, newspapers and magazines...where you’ll watch/listen/read in Spanish, of course, but importantly, you’ll get a real-world look at the local culture.

I don’t think there’s anything else like this out there...you’ll discover words and phrases only used in Mexico...Spain...Costa Rica...Ecuador...and of course, here in Panama.

When you spend time in these places in person, you’ll know those “local speak” phrases. How cool is that?

Selfishly, of course, I hope you choose Panama. And that you come here to Casco Viejo to study with us.

To nudge you in that direction...
